The State of the Video Games and Game Arts Industry is totally out of your control and there’s nothing you can do about it!

You are little and it’s big and it’s not going to bend to your wants and needs because you want and need it to.

Hi friends, my name is Eddie Faria for those of you who don’t know me. I’m the founder here at Game Arts Academy. I’ve been in the industry for around 13 years, and over the next couple days I’m going to share with you a short video training series to help you achieve your goal of building a career in 3D game arts.

So I will spare no time and jump right into it. With this first video, I want to talk about The State of The Video Games and Game Art Industry.

If you are trying to become a professional 3D games artist for real, it’s super important for you to know what is going on at a macro level since it will definitely affect you and will influence the strategy you need to adopt moving forward.

While this whole global corona-craze shut down businesses and whole industries, the video game industry actually saw a pretty impressive bump in sales growth.

And this is not surprising at all. The quarantine left tens, if not hundreds millions of people of all ages out of work and off school for months. And with all this extra time on lockdown, it’s also not surprising that people purchased and played more games than any time in the past.

A recent article from Ardvark swift talked about how the majority of video game companies were easily able to shift to remote working for their workforce within weeks.

They didn’t have to fire anybody, and 70% of companies surveyed said that they continued to hire during this time when many businesses and industries were laying off the majority of their workforce.

This is a very good trend, and something that has given a lot of hope and inspiration to our students here in Game Arts Academy.

But, while this is good news, all is not good for all aspiring 3D artists.

The digital art industry in video games is growing on both the supply and demand side.

I’m not an economics professional myself, I imagine you aren’t either, but this is pretty straightforward and simple to understand.

And it’s important that you understand it because it will affect you for the rest of your career in this industry. This is, if you can build a career.

So lemme make this as simple as possible with a short story of when I got into the industry around 13 years ago.

I started my college game art program in 2003/04. Back then the video game industry was growing pretty steadily. Likely not as fast as it is now, but fast enough.

And the demand for digital artists was growing fast too. There were not enough quality digital artists to fill the industry’s demand, so it wasn’t so hard to find work out of college. I actually got hired right out of college myself and never had a period where I was unemployed looking for work.

But as the industry grew and more people started playing games, more young people started getting a passion for game art and wanted to make games themselves.

And by the time I was teaching in the college system 10 years later, there were very few if any students going straight from college into industry jobs.

As the supply of digital artists increased, the game companies became less needy for artists and could be more picky about who they hired.

And here we are today. If you’ve been trying to find industry work in the last couple years, you probably know what I’m talking about.

Game sales are at record highs. And the game companies continue to hire artists even during the worst recession since 2008.

But there are also more artists trying to get work in the industry than ever before as well. So this poses a challenge for all aspiring artists now and in the future.

The State of The Video Games and Game Art Industry is looking good now and in the future. These last 6 months have proven that beyond a reasonable doubt.

And going into the fall, winter, and spring months or 2020 and 2021, this trend should continue.

So while that is good news for aspiring 3D artists, it doesn’t guarantee any of them a stable and satisfying job in the industry.

So you not only need to be a top tier artist who can prove it in your portfolio, you need to have a plan of action that guides your daily actions.

It’s possible to carve out a career for yourself in this industry, but you need a strategy that you can execute step by step, day by day to get you to where you are hoping to go.
